JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE POST OF DENTAL SURGERY ASSISTANT

Reports to: On day to day issues in the surgery – the dentist with whom you are working

On Reception and administrative duties – Receptionist/Practice Manager

On other issues- Practice Owner

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1.0 Patient Treatment Areas

 

1.1   Ensuring appropriate standards of cross infection control

1.2 Adhering to the practice procedures and protocols and particularly with regard to cross infection, patient confidentiality and personal cleanliness/appearance, which may be amended from time to time

1.3 Maintaining the safety and cleanliness of the patient treatment areas for which you have responsibility

Note: The practice employs a cleaner who will normally be responsible for floor coverings, however all clinical surfaces in the surgery are the responsibility of the dental nurse

1.4 Maintaining adequate stocks of materials/instruments to ensure efficiency in the surgery

1.5 Undertaking appropriate professional training as requested

1.6 To safely close down the surgery at the end of the day and start it up at the beginning of the day

1.7 To be familiar with the Practice Manual and adhere to the instructions and protocols it contains and to any amendments or additions.

 

2.0 Administrative/Reception

 

Many of the duties listed below are normally the responsibility of the reception staff or Practice Manager, however the dental nurse is expected to perform in these areas when necessary

 

2.1 To assist reception and clerical staff in dealing with patients, completing forms and filing, as requested to do so

2.2 To calculate and collect patients payments, keep an accurate record of payments and store payments securely

2.3 To make patient appointments and ensure the accurate recording thereof in the day book

2.4 To answer the telephone both in the surgery and in reception

2.5 To ensure appropriate messages are recorded on the answerphone to enable patients to contact the on call dentist

2.6 To clean and tidy the reception and entrance areas as necessary

Note it is normally the responsibility of the cleaner to maintain standards of cleanliness in these areas but in exceptional circumstances this duty may fall to other practice members

2.7 To take responsibility for the security of the premises at lunchtime and at the end of the day, to ensure that doors and windows are locked/closed and the alarm system is turned on

 

3.0 Business Planning/Training

 

1.1   Participate in the Practice business planning. Help to make agreed business objectives happen

1.2   Work with all staff on the marketing plan and help to monitor the results

1.3   Meet regularly with Practice Members to discuss aspects of the practice and to consider improvements

1.4   Maintain awareness of new developments and techniques which may involve attending courses and/or training and ensure that this information is passed onto the other Practice Members

1.5   Such other duties as is reasonable to perform

1.6   To enroll on a course leading to GDC registration if not already registered

1.7   To undertake the training required to maintain GDC registration

 

4.0 All Practice Members

 

HEALTH AND SAFETY

 

All Practice Members are required to acquaint themselves with health, safety and fire regulations and the accident notification system whilst taking all possible steps to safeguard the health safety and welfare of staff, patients and colleagues during working hours, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act

 

CONFIDENTIALITY

 

All Practice Members should be aware of the need to preserve strict confidentiality in dealing with patients and must not disclose information obtained in confidence except to authorised persons or as instructed by the practice owner

 

DATA PROTECTION

 

All Practice Members are required to comply with the Data Protection Act 1984 which regulates the use of computerised information

 

NO SMOKING POLICY

 

The Practice insists on no smoking policy on or near the premises and encourages staff to maintain excellent oral health by abstaining from smoking at all times.
